What is a prayer walk and why is The Gathering Church participating?
Our world is in great need of prayer! And in addition to spreading the Gospel, as Christians we are called to pray for one another. But rarely do those in need of prayer come and ask for it. So, at The Gathering Church, and at many churches around the world, we have decided to walk around our neighborhoods and town and pray!
The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6 to pray for others with persistence and in the power of the Holy Spirit. 1 Thessalonian 5:17 says, "Pray without ceasing." Some believe that the original idea for a "prayer walk" may have come from Joshua 6, where God directed the Israelites to march around the city of Jericho. After the designated number of trips around the city the people were told to yield up a loud shout and the priests were to blow horns. Their obedience brought down the walls of the city.
With these Bible passages in mind, The Gathering Church has decided to walk around our city and through out neighborhoods and pray! We will pray about whatever God brings to mind, keeping 1 John 5:14-15 (The Voice), "We live with bold confidence that God hears our voices when we ask for things that fit His plan. And if we have no doubt that He hears our voices, we can be assured that He moves in response to our call."
Join us on Monday evenings at 5:00pm at The Gathering Church, located in the Oak Street Chapel. As a group we will walk around town and simply pray. Some will pray in silence, some people will pray out-loud. It is up to you. The only goal is to pray!
How can I participate? Do I need to be a member of The Gathering Church?
If you are interested in joining us for a prayer walk all you need to do is show up! You do not need to be a member of The Gathering Church, but we do ask that you attend a church somewhere (just so that you are comfortable and familiar with intercessory prayer).
Each Monday evening before the walk, we will meet briefly at The Gathering Church and pray as a group before we leave. There will be a theme for each walk and all the necessary resources will be available before we leave and ahead of time on this web-page.
As you probably know, the evenings in Buena Vista can get cool, sometimes downright cold, so be sure to bring appropriate layers as we will be walking the whole time.
Children are always welcome as long as they are supervised at all times for safety. We will be walking on sidewalks, so be sure that you and your child know and understand local laws about bicycles, skateboards, etc. on sidewalks and in the streets.
